What's the difference between a Police Check and an AFP Check?

What's the difference between a police check and an AFP Check?

Are you confused by the different checks? You're not alone. Know how to avoid a costly mistake and get it right the first time.

Every year thousands of applicants apply for their background checks through us. There are a few common mistakes people make when they apply, costing them time and money. One of them is not knowing the difference between a police check and an AFP Check.

Although both are nationally recognised background checks, they serve different purposes and are often requested by different types of organisations.

You should clearly understand the difference between a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check (NCCHC) and an Australian Federal Police (AFP) Check before you apply. This will prevent you from potentially making a timely and costly mistake.

What is a Police Check?

A Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check (NCCHC), commonly known as a police check, looks at your criminal history across Australian states and territories. These checks are coordinated by the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC) and you can apply online through accredited providers (like Veritas Check) or directly from some police agencies.

You'll need a police check when:

  • Applying for certain jobs or a volunteer role
  • Enrolling as a student depending on your course
  • Applying for specific accreditations

Police checks are a much quicker process with most applicants receiving their results via email within 24 hours.

What is an AFP Check?

An Australian Federal Police (AFP) Check is different. It's used when the request relates to federal purposes, for example:

  • Visa and immigration applications
  • Adoption processes
  • Employment in the ACT

An AFP Check is conducted by the Australian Federal Police. Processing takes longer (usually up to 3 weeks), and costs vary depending on how and where you apply.

You can apply for your AFP check with us or directly with the Australian Federal Police.

How to choose the right one?

Before you apply, ask yourself two simple questions:

  • Who is requesting it?
  • Why is it needed?

If your potential employer, university, or volunteer organisation specifically asks for a police check, an NCCHC is the right choice. If you've been told to provide an AFP Check for visas, immigration, or federal purposes, then that's what you'll need.

Choosing the wrong check can cause costly delays or even rejection of your application. That's why applying with Veritas means peace of mind: you apply once, and our trained administrators ensure it's the right check for your situation.

Confusion between police checks and AFP Checks is common. We see it on a weekly basis. But with the right guidance, it's easy to get it right the first time.
